The Origin of Flight

The GUILD....
ARC 301 Final Project

Our grand finale in Bemis (HU arch. building)

Def. of guild -An association of persons of the same trade or pursuits, formed to protect mutual interests and maintain standards.

We were given a site in downtown Newport News, VA and we were to design a building that is 20,000 square feet that would be used to house a guild of any type. As a part of our program, we were required to include workshop or studio space, office space, and a gallery space.

I chose to use my building as a place where golf clubs are created and this is what i came up with....

Concept:

.There are three Major components of a golf club that is common among every brand, make and model. Every single golf club ever made has a HEAD , a GRIP , and a SHAFT and this is what i kept in mind from the start of this project.

I immediately related the three main components of a golf club to the three main components of my building. I saw the head as the office space, the grip is what i considered to be the studio or workshop space, and the shaft is the gallery space. The gallery space is considered the shaft because it acts as the shaft of a golf club in relationship to my building. The shaft of a golf club brings the grip and the head together, soo the gallery space does the same thing. The gallery space is a place where the created product(s) (golf clubs) can be tested and possibly purchased which brings the craft of the workshop and connects it with the business side of things.
